Evolution of DWRR Brand

Waiting in anticipation since October 1, 2009, fans and radio listeners are keeping their seat belts tight for a new 101.9 DWRR brand to launch very soon. Meantime, the station goes on an automated jock-less mode and identifies itself as ABS-CBN 101.9. According to DJ Laila, the DJs are still around but are only spinning until official launch of the new brand.

No one knows for now if this re-branding is a complete format flip or just a new logo launch. DWRR, has had many rebrandings in the past from KO Radio in 1986, Zoo 101.9 in 1987, Radio Romance in 1989, WRR 101.9 in 1996, “Alam Mo Na ‘Yan! 101.9 For Life!” in 2005, and Bespren 101.9 For Life in 2009.

While everyone’s speculating on the precise day of the launch, some are thinking that the station will embrace the network’s provincial FM brand M.O.R. (My Only Radio). It won’t be for long though, if it’s going to be M.O.R. 101.9 or something else.

In the meantime, let’s take a trip back in time with the evolution of the DWRR 101.9 logo and jingles.

96.3 Easy Rocks Gets Jingles from ReelWorld

The 96.3 FM Band in Metro Manila has had been the favorite destination of listeners for many years when it comes to light rock music. 96.3 WRock is the epitome of AC radio in the Philippines, with franchises operating in Cebu, Bacolod, and Davao.

Aside from the signature light rock format, 96.3 was best remembered for its popular radio jingles from TM Century, which were originally produced for 96.7 FM K-Lite. (You can listen to the original KLite jingles here)

After its re-branding to Easy Rock and acquisition by Cebu Broadcasting Company in 2008, 96.3 gets a facelift with contemporary AC jingles from ReelWorld.

The purchase of the new set of jingles seems continue the tradition of its preceding brand. The new Easy Rock jingles resembles the melodic themes and emotional lyrics of the WRock’s jingles.

The first time I was in Manila, the first radio station I tuned into was 99.5 RT, undoubtedly it was the Z100 or the KIIS FM of the Philippines. 99.5 RT had and always has the complete ingredients that makes a CHR station complete. Great jocks, cool contests, and four to floor radio imaging.

99.5 RT surely has the best radio imaging in town. You name it, they got jingles from TM Century to Thompson Creative. Their jingles really defined what CHR station should be in the Philippines. My friend here j5bata shared his airchecks and off air montage of DWRT jingles. I didn’t know there were more of them. One of the resings here, I recognize it coming from an original KIIS jingle package. The rest, wow, some jingles are classic, that date back to the PAMS era. PAMS was the popular jingle company in the U.S. in the 50s. Check out the jingles here on his YouTube video.

Nope, it’s not the iFM in the Philippines, it’s WAOI FM in San Antonio, Texas. The station, which bears the iFM logo, now has its jingle package syndication of LiteHouse Studios posted on the Jones TM website. LiteHouse Studios is a production company that specializes in AC radio jingle imaging. Along with iFM jingle resings are station montages for KVIL, WBIZ and many others. We’ve seen the teaser, now we’ve heard the preview. ReelWorld ONE promises to be the last jingle package. Undeniably, ReelWorld ONE will be Kissville’s, Light House Studios’, Rhythmix Studios’ and (the yet to be launched) Young Guns Studios’ ultimate competitor. But what difference will ReelWorld ONE bring?

Firstly, I see that ReelWorld ONE will be a different run as compared to Kissville and its cousins. ONE promises more flexibility and choices for its cuts. And get this, ONE brings in more add ons such as production IDs and of course the beatmixes which Kissville and its cousins do not offer.

We’ve heard some updates already for ReelWorld ONE CHR and we think that ONE offers more playlist-friendly cuts than Kissville. However, ONE is yet to launch on February 18, so we can only wait and see.
